The Mermaid

Very seldom do you see a beautiful piece of poetry on a normal day.  I am happy to be reminded of one of the first things I sincerely fell in love with.

I haven’t been posting as much as I should have been, and please excuse me.  It’s been a rough couple of weeks at work and I’m just taking my time to write my thoughts.  I wouldn’t really want to bore you with my rants. :)

Will be back soon! <3

REVIEW: The Avengers

I don’t know why I delayed watching The Avengers so much.  I guess it’s mostly because I didn’t really get to become an ultimate fanatic when we were watching the cartoons and reading the comic books when we were kids younger.  When Dylan invited me to watch the movie, I said yes, and lemme just say, he was excited from start to finish.

I don’t know if there’s someone out there who hasn’t seen it, so let me put my review/reaction under the cut.

Cool iPhone Stuff

A lot of paperwork was required in the office for quite some time, so you can only imagine how little attention I’ve been paying to my phone.  Hahahaha.  I am usually attached to these things, but lately I haven’t been.

Did you know I only started playing Temple Run?  When it was trending in the Philippines for the longest time, I was just typing away like the typity type that I am.  So now, I’ve officially started exploring the cool iPhone stuff I’ve been meaning to get for myself.  Or at least, twisting someone else’s arm so they can get it for me.

I’ve never really had my favorite iPhone cover.  To this day, I am using the simple silicone one that makes my phone bounce to safety each time I drop it.  But when I do get this cover — which an amazing blend of the old and the new — I am so making sure that dropping the phone is out of the question.

I don’t even know if this is a legitimate product!  Hahaha.  But nonetheless, I would like to think that being in a tropical country has more benefits than just the 300 days in a year sunbathing option (I don’t even like sunbathing nor do I have a purpose for it as I am already tan).  This solar charger can easily come in handy.  And it’ll also solve the ever present dilemma of poor battery life in iPhones. Found this on here.

I found this on Pinterest and has successfully traced it back to Etsy.  COME ON!  This has to be the coolest iPhone dock ever.  EVERRRRR.  I want it so bad, but it’s as expensive as the shoe I want to get, and I love shoes so I’m in the middle of an internal debate somehow.  BUT if someone would get it for me, that problem is easily solved!

Especially that the owner allows shipping to the Philippines. :)

Last and certainly not the least is the iPhone lens dial.  Named by CNN.go as one of the 10 best travel products for 2012, this is every photography whore’s dream come true.  Come on!  Look at that baby.  Not only will it make your iPhone look more bad ass, but it will also immediately eliminate the time you need to edit your photos because the lens options!  Wide angle!  Fisheye! Telephoto!  And all you do is rotate!  Oh dear God, I want this.

Available in Photojojo.

Look at that.  An instant guide that will make my materialistic side very very happy.  :)

J. K. Rowling’s new book!

I woke up today to some glorious news:  J. K. Rowling finally announced the title and release date of her new book!

The Casual Vacancy is Rowling’s first adult book.  It’s also her first work outside of the Harry Potter universe.  According to Times Live, the book will be “blackly comic, thought-provoking and constantly surprising.”

My pants are on fire!  Boogie dance!

Here are some more general details about the book:

Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils … Pagford is not what it at first seems.  And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.  Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations?

I am excited very much with this news.  I am such a book freak!  Or rather Harry Potter freak.  Whatevs.  I know you’re excited too.

The book is set to be released worldwide on September 27.  I wonder if the Philippines gets to have an earlier date, just like the movies…

REVIEW: The Fault in Our Stars

Genre: Young Adult
Author: John Green
Release Date: January 2012

I first read a work by John Green when I chanced upon this quote from his book Looking for Alaska:

I wanted so badly to lie down next to her on the couch, to wrap my arms around her and sleep. Not fuck, like in those movies. Not even have sex. Just sleep together in the most innocent sense of the phrase. But I lacked the courage and she had a boyfriend and I was gawky and she was gorgeous and I was hopelessly boring and she was endlessly fascinating. So I walked back to my room and collapsed on the bottom bunk, thinking that if people were rain, I was drizzle and she was hurricane.

From that point, I was hooked and immediately ran to my favorite bookstore to grab a copy. I finished the entire thing in four hours, a record for me. Then I heard that another book is about to be released, The Fault In Our Stars. I had to get it right away and I was not anywhere near the vicinity of thinking about being disappointed.

The Fault in Our Stars highlights the life of two teenagers with cancer, Augustus and Hazel. For an already tragic-sounding storyline, you’d think that this book would talk about the glory of death. On the contrary, it doesn’t. John Green takes you to a rollercoaster (“that only goes up”) of living life to the fullest and finding your infinities in the moment.

It was such a grave mistake to read this book at a time when work felt too daunting for me, as I ended up semi-bawling in my cubicle, trying to contain the tears brought about by the magnificent and simplistic writing by John Green.

Maybe it’s unusual for some to have a twenty-something read a young adult book, but you see the author does not write for ordinary young adults. John Green infuses philosophy, critical thinking and almost a sense of self-affirmation and self-realization that most adults lose sight of every once in a while. John Green treats his readers as smart and insightful thinkers; he moves you through Hazel then to Augustus, flowing through Isaac and even Dave, the brother-in-law.

The book is nothing short of magnificent. It delivers as much as it has promised, if not more. You need not be a young adult to appreciate this book. It is a great buy and an even more rewarding read. I strongly suggest that you go grab a copy (or leave a comment if you intend to borrow mine), and be enamored by the characters and the Lonely, Vaguely Pedophilic Swing Set Seeks the Butts of Children.
