Odd Office Policy

I don’t know about you but something about the next two images that flashed in my browser after typing the web address and hitting enter just doesn’t feel right.  Not just today.  Any day.

Found out about this while I was trying to sign a petition in Change.org.  And I read Maria Ressa’s blog every now and then.  It’s just weird.  And odd.  And I find it slightly… rude.

Or maybe it’s just me.  Thoughts?

JCPenney Shirt is an epic fail

JC Penney has discontinued the sale of this merchandise.  Their official statement reads:

J.C. Penney is committed to being America’s destination for great style and great value for the whole family. We agree that the ‘Too pretty’ t-shirt does not deliver an appropriate message, and we have immediately discontinued its sale.  Our merchandise is intended to appeal to a broad customer base, not to offend them. We would like to apologize to our customers and are taking action to ensure that we continue to uphold the integrity of our merchandise that they have come to expect.

I am quite infuriated with this bland statement, so I’ve decided to just enumerate the reasons why.

  1. We agree that the ‘Too pretty’ t-shirt does not deliver an appropriate message… – If you agree, like ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY agree that is does not deliver an appropriate message, why was this approved in the first place?  Why did it pass design and conceptualization?  Production?  Quality check?  I bet it’s made of fantastic material, but the content?  Really?!  COME ON.
  2. Our merchandise is intended to appeal to a broad customer base, not to offend them. – So your broad customer base still includes young women thinking that they cannot do as well in academics as young men can?  Your broad customer base still includes girls aged 7 to 16 years old who have the mindset that women cannot be both pretty and smart?  Your broad customer base still includes young women that does not see the likes of Natalie Portman, Julia Stiles, Rashida Jones, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Jodie Foster as iconic women who are stunningly beautiful and from Ivy League schools?
  3. We would like to apologize to our customers and are taking action to ensure that we continue to uphold the integrity of our merchandise that they have come to expect.  – I think by now what consumers have come to expect, especially after the Barbie fail in 1994, is the fact that the playing field is even for men and women.  The consumers have come to expect that purchased clothing is to boost their self-esteem, reaffirm their self-worth and NOT question their ability and their potential.

This is so disappointing.  And frustrating.

And I seriously hope they do something about the purchases of this item of clothing.  My nieces Myah, Madison and Lily are all in New Jersey and I’d be stumped if one day they saw someone wear that ugly piece of crap.  I do not want anything that will make them think that they are less capable and that the boys can just do all the work.

Amy Winehouse joins 27 Club

I woke up to the news that Amy Winehouse was found dead in her flat on Saturday (Sunday here).  Here’s the news from People.com:

Grammy Winner Amy Winehouse Dies

Saturday July 23, 2011 01:00 PM EDT

Amy Winehouse has died.

The troubled singer, whose unique and soulful voice made her a Grammy winner, was found dead at her London apartment on Saturday, according tovarious reports. She was 27.

“We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of such a gifted musician, artist and performer,” a statement from her U.S. record label reads. “Our prayers go out to Amy’s family, friends and fans at this difficult time.”

London’s Metropolitan Police released also a statement about finding a body but didn’t identify the singer: “Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased,” the statement reads, according to the U.K.’s Daily Mail. “On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene. Inquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained.”

The singer, who was to some as well known for her struggles with addictionas her music, was in rehab as recently as May and canceled a planned summer tour of Europe in June, following a disastrous appearance in Belgrade, Serbia.

But Winehouse’s musical accomplishments were many, including nearlysweeping the Grammy Awards in 2008 with her album Back to Black, which scored five trophies including record of the year, song of the year and best new artist. Unable to attend the Grammys due to legal troubles, Winehouse performed via satellite from London during the ceremony.

The singer had a tumultuous relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil, whom shemarried in 2007. But the on-again, off-again couple were officially divorced in 2009.

That’s some pretty amazing talent gone to waste.  I mean really.  Pia Magalona could not have said it better.

Such a waste.

For those who know someone or is friends with someone or who has a family member struggling with the same struggles as the 27 Club members, DO NOT EVER stop reaching out to them.  They do not know that they need  help; KEEP GIVING IT.  Force it if you must.  Troubled souls will rest in peace better if they’re at peace here.

Bitch fit

What?  I’m not always poised and calm and collected.  Half the time, I get upset over the littlest things but today, the thing I am upset about is not so little.

Is it so bad when I find it hard to work in a warm environment?  I have not been in this kind of an environment for YEARS and I mean YEARS.  I really hope whatever improvement is supposed to be happening happen soon, because this warmth, this oven-like feeling, is not taking me to any productive length at all.

And don’t give me the drink water with tons of ice bullshit.  I don’t find that calming nor anywhere close to cooling my body down.  I want to be cool and calm and comfortable, absolutely nowhere close to feeling as if I’m about to turn into the first ever human bacon.

So yeah.  There.  Bitch fit.  Please pray that the airconditioning gets fixed soon.  This is just way too much to take.  It’s warm and the windows cannot be opened.  Come on.  Who are we kidding?

Fight for good grammar!

I am always depressed when I encounter really bad grammar.  I mean who wouldn’t be?  The mere fact that there’s text speak and there’s actually a growth rate in Jejemons already pisses me off.  Come on!  Marlowe, Shakespeare, Bronte, Alcott, Tolstoy… These people wooed and serenaded men and women through time.  These people are just some of the classics, the greats.  And it’s not because they SPoKE LYk a JEjem0NSTER P0Wh. JaJaJaJa~ p0WH.

So please fight for good grammar, spelling and diction!  And punctuation!  It’s a very important fight.

Context matters a lot.

It makes for a really good point too.
